This is practical breeding knowledge for raising healthy, true-to-type heritage gamefowl such as the Aseel. A "best performing" bird is sound in health, strong in conformation, vigorous, fertile, even-tempered, and a credit to its bloodline — the qualities that make a bird valuable to buyers, breeders, and at shows. The science below is the same animal-breeding science used across all livestock.
1. Start with a clear goal
Good breeding is not luck — it is a plan repeated over many generations. Before you pair a single bird, decide what you are breeding for: type and conformation, health and vigor, productivity (fertility and hatchability), temperament, or preserving a recognised colour line (Dega, Kaki, Nemali, Reza, Savala, and others). Write your goal down. A breeder who chases ten goals at once fixes none of them.
2. Select your stock — the most important step
About 90% of your result is decided before mating, by which birds you choose. No method can rescue poor foundation stock.
Choose the brood cock for excellent health (bright eye, clean nostrils, smooth scales, no parasites), true breed type, strong straight legs and good bone, a confident balanced temperament, and — crucially — a known, recorded family of good birds, not just one good individual.
Choose the brood hen for the same, plus good fertility, a family history of laying and hatching well, and good mothering. The hen contributes at least half the quality.
Golden rule: breed only from physically and mentally sound birds that come from superior families. An average bird from an outstanding family is often a safer breeder than one flashy bird from a poor family. Family record beats individual flash.
3. The practical setup
Breeding age. Don't rush young stock. Aseel mature slowly — males reach full maturity around 7 months; hens often lay their first egg at 4.5–5 months but breed best once mature. Many serious breeders prefer a proven 2-year-old cock over a yearling.
Cock-to-hen ratio. Single mating (one cock, one hen) is the gold standard when you need to know exactly which two birds produced each chick — essential for serious line breeding. A trio (1 cock : 3–4 hens) is practical for volume; a flock ratio of about 1 cock to 8 hens keeps fertility good at scale, but you lose exact parentage unless you trap-nest.
Fertility & hatching. Incubation takes 21 days. A hen does best brooding 5–7 eggs for a full, even hatch. Typical Aseel fertility is around 65–70%, with hatchability roughly 80% of fertile eggs — naturally lower than commercial breeds, so cock vigor and patience matter. Collect eggs daily, store them pointed-end down at a cool 13–18°C, turn them, and set within 7 days.
4. The four breeding methods
Inbreeding (close relatives)
Mating brother × sister or close kin rapidly concentrates and "fixes" traits, making the family uniform. The risk is inbreeding depression — doubling up hidden faults, giving smaller, weaker birds and lower fertility. Use it deliberately, in short bursts, only from your very best, soundest birds, while culling hard.
Line breeding (controlled, looser inbreeding)
Mating to a more distant relative in a planned way — a cock back to his grandmother, a pullet to her grandfather. It keeps the family concentrated around one or two outstanding ancestors without the harsh risk of brother×sister mating. This is the most common way to maintain a strain over years. It's inbreeding with a seat belt.
Outcrossing (same breed, unrelated family)
Mating two birds of the same breed but no close relationship restores vigor and fertility when a line has been line-bred too long and is tiring — without leaving the breed. Use it to rescue a tiring line, then return to line breeding to re-fix the type.
Crossbreeding (two different breeds)
Crossing two breeds produces hybrid vigor (heterosis) — F1 offspring often outperform both parents in growth and hardiness. The catch: the F1 is uniform and vigorous but does not breed true. Breed two F1s together and the next generation scatters. Crossbreds are an end product, not a foundation.
5. The master principle
You FIX and concentrate traits by breeding close (inbreeding / line breeding). You ADD new traits and restore vigor by crossing (outcross or crossbreed).
A healthy long-term program alternates: line-breed to set your type → when the line tires or needs a missing quality, bring in one outcross → then line-breed again to re-fix everything around your best birds. Inbreed, outcross, inbreed, outcross — that rhythm is how strains are built and held for decades.
6. Practical "what to mix to get what"
There's no magic colour formula, but there is reliable logic. Decide whether you are fixing (breed closer from your best) or adding (cross in a bird strong in one specific quality, then grade back toward your line). Cross for one thing at a time — import five differences and you import five problems. Remember the F1 rule, test reciprocal crosses both directions, and always cull: selection is the other half of every cross.
7. Records — your most valuable tool
You cannot improve what you don't measure. Ring or leg-band every bird at hatch, tied to its sire and dam. Record parents, hatch date, colour, weights, health and vaccination events, and fertility results. Keep a simple pedigree for at least three generations so you always know how related two birds are before you pair them. 8. Feed, health & welfare
Fertility and chick strength are built by management, not just genes. Feed breeding stock a quality diet (around 16% protein) with greens, calcium and clean water. Deworm and treat parasites before pairing, follow a local vaccination schedule, and quarantine any new bird 2–4 weeks before it touches your flock.
